Not Your Mother's Shadow Box: What Wedding Flower Preservation Looks Like Now

For thirty years, preserving your wedding bouquet meant one thing: a shadow box. Most people come to us searching for flower preservation in general. They know they want to keep their bouquet. What they do not know yet is what is possible, because the options have changed considerably and most of what is written about this subject is fifteen years old.

The shadow box is usually the first thing that comes to mind, because it was the answer for a long time. So that is a good place to begin.

What a flower shadow box is

A shadow box is a deep, glass-fronted frame. Your preserved bouquet is arranged inside it in three dimensions, often alongside your invitation, a ribbon, a photograph, or your boutonniere. The frame is usually matted, the box is sealed, and it hangs on a wall.

For a long time this was the only real option. If you wanted to keep your wedding flowers, you found a studio that freeze dried them and built you a shadow box. Plenty of beautiful work has been done that way, and if a shadow box is what you picture, there is nothing wrong with wanting one.

But it comes with real constraints that nobody mentions until later.

The problem with the traditional shadow box

It is a box of air. The flowers inside a shadow box are dried and loose. They are protected by glass, not by anything touching them. Move the box, tilt it, or ship it, and petals shift. Over years, they settle.

Humidity gets in. This matters enormously in South Florida. A sealed shadow box is not actually airtight, and Florida humidity finds its way into everything. Dried flowers sitting in a humid box are the beginning of a long, slow problem. We have had people bring us shadow boxes from ten years ago with mold inside the glass.

It only does one thing. A shadow box hangs on a wall and gets looked at. That is the entire job. It takes up significant wall space, it is fragile, and if you move to a house where it does not fit the décor, it goes in a closet.

It is big. A full bridal bouquet in a shadow box usually means something in the 16x20 range or larger. That is a commitment.

What we do instead

At Wild Coast Flower Preservation, your flowers are not placed in a box. They are sealed inside UV-resistant, food-safe epoxy resin.

That single difference changes everything downstream. There is no air around your flowers. No humidity, no dust, no settling, no shifting petals. The resin is the protection, and it is in direct contact with every bloom. It is also solid enough that you can pick the piece up, carry it, hand it to someone, and set a coffee cup on it.

This is the part that surprises people. A shadow box is something you protect. A resin keepsake is something that protects itself.

So what does it actually look like?

Here is where the shadow box comparison gets interesting, because we make pieces that do everything a shadow box does and several things it cannot.

If you want the wall piece

Our floating frames are the closest thing we make to a shadow box, and they are the reason people stop mid-sentence on the phone. Your pressed flowers are suspended in clear resin with hidden hanging clips behind the floral design, so the piece reads as floating rather than mounted. Light passes through it. There is no glass to break, no matting to yellow, and nothing inside to shift.

We make them from 10x10 up to 18x18, plus a 24x12 for a long wall.

If you want your invitation in there too

This is the main reason people choose a shadow box, and we can do it. Inlaid items go directly into the resin: your wedding invitation, a handwritten note, a ribbon, a program, a piece of lace. Set into the piece permanently, not placed behind glass next to the flowers.

That is the same sentiment as a shadow box with none of the fragility.

If you want it in your hands, not on your wall

This is where we leave the shadow box category entirely.

Your bouquet can become a serving tray you set out when friends come over. A set of coasters that live on the coffee table. A ring dish on the nightstand you touch every single night. A resin block with your blooms suspended in three dimensions, sitting on a mantel.

A shadow box is admired. These get used. That is the whole idea.

If you want more than one thing

A full bridal bouquet holds far more flowers than one shadow box needs. Most people split theirs: a wall piece plus something small, or a tray plus coasters plus a pendant. Our preservation packages are built for exactly that.

A little bouquet goes a long way.

Pressed or whole flower?

Both are available, and the choice shapes the finished piece more than anything else.

Pressed flower preservation flattens your blooms and arranges them graphically. It is the better fit for trays, coasters, and wall pieces, and it handles bouquets with lots of small delicate flowers beautifully.

Whole flower preservation keeps your blooms in their full three-dimensional shape before setting them in resin. A rose still reads as a rose you could cup in your hand. This is the closest thing to what a shadow box gives you dimensionally, and it goes into blocks and sculptural pieces.

How it works

Your fresh flowers dry in silica gel for 8 to 12 weeks. Nothing is rushed here, because flowers pulled early hold moisture and brown after sealing.

Then we design your piece and send it to you for approval. This is your call, not ours. Nothing goes into resin until you sign off on the layout, and if you want a bloom moved or a color balanced differently, that is the moment.

After approval comes resin casting, then a nine-step sanding sequence down to a 2000-grit mirror finish, then finishing and photography. Start to finish runs about five months.

One timing note that matters more than any other: fresh flowers need to reach our Pompano Beach studio within about five days of the wedding. If your wedding has not happened yet, reserving your date ahead of time is the single best thing you can do.

Why we say it is not your mother's shadow box

Because it is not a box, it is not fragile, and it does not just hang there - but your mom is telling you to get this, or she did a shadow box when she was married. Point is, it's old school.

Twenty years ago, preserving your bouquet meant one thing and the answer was a frame on a wall. The materials are better now, the methods are better, and the pieces do more for you. Your flowers can be something you use on a Tuesday, not something you dust on a Saturday.
