How to Preserve Your Wedding Bouquet: Everything You Need to Know
Summary
Preserving your wedding bouquet means turning those fresh flowers into something you can keep, display, and actually use for decades. This post covers the main preservation methods available, how they compare in terms of quality, timeline, and cost, when to start planning, and what to look for in a preservation company before you book.

What Bouquet Preservation Actually Is
When we talk about wedding bouquet preservation, we mean the process of stopping your flowers from dying and locking them into a permanent, displayable form. Done well, the result is a piece of home decor or jewelry you reach for every day. Done poorly, it ends up in a box or closet somewhere looking sad and brown.
The finished product depends entirely on the flowers, the methods and materials used, and the skill behind it. Two companies can claim to “preserve flowers” and produce results that look nothing alike. Understanding what goes into the process and what products are possible helps you choose wisely.

The Main Preservation Methods
Whole Flower Preservation — Resin and Shadow Boxes
Whole flower preservation produces the most vivid, three-dimensional results. Fresh flowers are dried in silica gel over several weeks (or freeze dried for certain flower types), then designed for your approval and cast in layers of UV-resistant resin. The flowers hold their full shape, and every angle of the bloom stays visible inside the finished piece. As with all drying methods, dried flowers will look slightly different in color and texture once fully dehydrated — that is just the nature of the process — but the results are stunning.
A note on shadow boxes: a small number of companies use industrial freeze dryers to preserve a full bouquet at its most vibrant color before displaying it in a shadow box. Freeze drying machines are extremely expensive and difficult to perfect, and good luck finding a shadow box company that actually does this.

Pros: Stunning clarity and color retention. Full three-dimensional flowers viewable at all angles. Older and already-dried bouquets can still be used in our thicker 3D items like bookends and blocks. Customizable finished products including inlaid text, objects, or wood. Food-safe and UV-resistant. Functional home decor options include trays, bookends, tables, charcuterie boards, ring holders, and more.
Cons: Fresh flowers are still subject to spotting or transparency in resin. Color correction is more difficult on three-dimensional whole flower shapes. Partially dried or wilted bouquets can still be preserved, but with some limitations on color vibrancy. More expensive due to resin volume — though our ring holder is always a great cost-effective whole flower option.
Timeline: 3 to 5 months at Wild Coast. Some other resin companies and preservation companies can run out to a year depending on their backlog and process.

Pressed Flower Preservation — Resin and Glass Framing
Pressed Flowers is one of the oldest preservation methods. Flowers are flattened, dried, and then either mounted behind glass in a frame or used in resin pieces.
Traditional glass framing companies press flowers between panes of glass and create framed pieces, typically with a turnaround around 2 - 3 months. We do things differently. At Wild Coast, we use three pressing methods: a book press, a Microfleur, and a freeze dry press. We then use those pressed flowers in resin trays, coasters, jewelry, wall decor, and more, giving you far more options than a single framed piece behind glass.

Pros: Glass framing can be a lower price point with a quicker turnaround. Pressed resin items are also generally more affordable compared to whole flower blocks. Works well for wilted bouquets because the flowers often look better pressed than they would in 3D form. Color correction looks more natural on pressed flowers.
Cons: You lose all dimension. The flowers are flat, fragile, and more susceptible to fading over time without UV-protective glass. Glass framing offers limited customization options. Requires fresh flowers sent within five days of your wedding.
Timeline: Framing companies typically run around 3 months. Pressed resin pieces from Wild Coast fall within our standard 3 to 5 month window.
Freeze-Drying
Freeze-drying removes moisture from the flowers at very low temperatures, maintaining their shape and some color without a drying agent. The process runs 24 to 48 hours in a freeze-drying oven. The flowers can be displayed loosely or arranged under a glass dome.
At Wild Coast, we also use freeze drying selectively within our preservation process. When a flower’s vibrancy does not hold well in silica gel drying, we will often try freeze drying to preserve the brightest possible color before casting in resin.

Pros: Maintains three-dimensional structure well. Good for bouquets with complex or tropical flower types.
Cons: Requires expensive, specialized equipment. Finished flowers are brittle and fragile — they can break easily. As a standalone preservation method, freeze-dried flowers are very difficult to maintain due to extensive
When to Start Planning
The single most important thing you can do for your bouquet is plan before the wedding.
Most brides contact preservation companies after the fact, which limits your options and often the availability. At Wild Coast, we allow last-minute orders, but we still recommend booking a few months before the wedding so your order is confirmed and we are prepared when your flowers arrive.
Fresh flowers within 5 days produce the best resin results. Flowers that sit in a vase for a week before shipping have already started breaking down, which affects what we can do with color and clarity.

Most companies give you detailed shipping instructions but do not provide packing materials or labels. Some offer materials at an additional cost, which would need to be prearranged. We offer a flat-rate Priority Overnight FedEx shipping label so that if the carrier tries to charge you more, you always have the option to purchase our label at a guaranteed flat rate.
If you already have dried flowers from a past wedding, do not count yourself out. We work with dried bouquets regularly, specifically in our whole flower preservation items like bookends and blocks where the extra resin depth accommodates the flower’s condition. We set realistic expectations upfront so you know exactly what results are achievable before we start.
What to Look for in a Preservation Company
Ask for before-and-after photos, not just finished product shots. Finished product photos only show you the final piece. Before-and-afters show you what the company actually did with real flowers, which tells you much more.
Look at product range. If you want something specific like a round serving tray or a set of coasters, confirm the company can actually make it. Not everyone has the molds and process for functional custom pieces.
Read reviews for communication quality, not just the final product. A 3 to 5 month process involves a lot of back and forth including design approvals, shipping updates, color consultations. You want a company that responds quickly and keeps you informed the whole way through.
Ask about UV protection. Resin without UV inhibitors will yellow and fade over time. Our tested and proven formula is specifically designed to prevent yellowing, which is especially important for white and light-colored flowers.
Ask about their workspace. People have actually asked us if we have cats because home preservation studios often have pets wandering through. A professional studio with temperature-controlled rooms and organized systems is what you want for a piece you plan to keep for decades.
